Featured Artist – Mark Rodriguez
Mark Rodriguez is a Florida-based photographer, animator, graphic designer, illustrator, prop builder–to sum it up–he is an artist and he likes to create things.
He spent his studies at the Art Institute of Atlanta where he earned a BFA in Graphic design with minor studies in animation. He is a freelance designer–and with his company Godriguezart–he creates concept-driven portraits, logo designs, a full line of custom merchandise, as well as creates math animations and is the voice for Professor Von Svchmohawk work for the non-profit Why-U.
Known mostly for his self-portrait work, Mark explores everything from pop culture to depression to absolute silliness in his creations going to great links to get the shot in mind. He has at times covered himself with tar and feathers, allowed ladybugs to run rampant across his face, built a full-size electric chair, and even thrown himself off a roof all in the name of getting the shot he is looking for. He is not only well versed in practical effects but also extremely proficient in photoshop and his compositing skills have earned him the name “Godriguez” as he is commonly referred to and as his tagline implies “I am not a God, but I play one in Photoshop”.
Mark’s work borders on the dark side of life at times, but he never uses shock value to get his point across. Though his themes often revolve around immortality, mental state of being, and other often times sinister intent, he is still able to invite and draw even the timidest of viewers into his work with what he likes to call “approachable darkness”.
Mark has received awards for his animation and design work from both the ADDYs and Communication Arts magazine as well as being the recipient of multiple Photoshopworld Guru awards including “Best in Show” in 2015 for his photography work.
Mark tries to take a different look at the world and see what he can do to push himself as an artist in the various mediums he works in. In his work, he likes to explore conceptual and creative thinking pieces, as well as ones that just make you laugh and he for one is never afraid to laugh at himself via his art.
Mark can be found everywhere on social media as Godriguezart.
